too big for ma britches

Psalm 44:3, "It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You loved them."

The psalmist is calling God to awaken and help Israel against their present enemies.  They had experienced defeat and long for God to come to their aid for His name's sake.  He makes this request based on the faithfulness of God to the promises made to their forefathers.  They had experienced His victory in battle many times.  They also gave the glory to Him...knowing that it was not their sword or arm that had brought the victory.

Sometimes, in my righteous indignation, I'm like, "what is up with these Israelites?  They get their way and then so quickly forget and start complaining again?!  I have learned how mighty big I get in my own britches.  And unlike the Israelites, I have the Old and New Testament that I have on my heart AND the Holy Spirit living inside me...and YET I still am quick to forget that every good and perfect thing in my life comes from God above (James 1:17)...like SOMEHOW, I had anything to really do with the favor I have found.  So, I love that the writer calls to mind that it was You, Lord.  You gave them the victory...the light of Your face and Your strength.  Help me remember, Lord, that it is You who makes all things beautiful and fights for me.
